A major federal-state confrontation has erupted in Chicago following President Donald Trump’s Saturday authorization of 300 National Guard members to the city, directly overriding the strong objections of Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker. The controversial deployment comes just hours after a federal immigration agent shot a woman during an incident in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood on October 4, 2025, sparking immediate protests and heightened tensions across the city.

The White House justified the deployment by citing “ongoing violent riots and lawlessness” that local leaders, including Pritzker, have allegedly failed to quell, stating the troops are needed to protect federal officers and assets involved in immigration enforcement. However, Governor Pritzker vehemently condemned the move as “absolutely outrageous and un-American,” accusing Trump of escalating chaos and fear by militarizing immigration operations. Pritzker revealed he received an ultimatum from the Department of Defense: “Call up your troops, or we will.”

The incident preceding the deployment involved federal immigration agents and a woman in Brighton Park. While a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson claimed the woman was part of a group that “boxed in” and rammed a federal vehicle, activists asserted that ICE agents crashed into a civilian car before opening fire. The shooting, which reportedly left the woman with non-life-threatening injuries, quickly led to protests where federal agents deployed flash-bang grenades and tear gas against demonstrators who reportedly threw water bottles.

This federal intervention is part of the Trump administration’s aggressive “Operation Midway Blitz,” which began September 8 and has resulted in over 800 arrests. Illinois Democratic leaders, including U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, have denounced the deployment as a dangerous, un-American, and unconstitutional abuse of military power, intended to instill fear and silence dissent. Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran, emphasized that “Illinois does not want or need troops in our cities. Full stop.”

Pritzker has consistently maintained there is no need for military troops in Illinois, asserting he “will not call up our National Guard to further Trump’s acts of aggression against our people.” The federalization of National Guard troops without gubernatorial consent is unprecedented in Illinois, and legal challenges, including a temporary restraining order against a similar deployment in Portland, Oregon, highlight the contentious nature of these actions under the Posse Comitatus Act.
