Tesla has announced a significant decline in vehicle deliveries for the second quarter of 2025, signaling a potential second consecutive annual sales drop. The electric vehicle giant reported delivering 384,122 vehicles, a 13.5% decrease from the 443,956 units delivered a year ago and falling short of analyst expectations.

The sharp downturn is largely attributed to a growing backlash against CEO Elon Musk’s political stances and an aging vehicle lineup. Despite the market reacting positively to deliveries not being as low as some forecasts, Tesla’s stock has already lost 25% of its value this year, partly due to brand damage in crucial markets like Europe and the US. A public dispute between Musk and former President Trump in early June also contributed to a substantial $150 billion loss in market value for Tesla, though the stock has since recovered somewhat.

This delivery slump occurs even after Musk indicated a sales turnaround in April. Furthermore, a recent refresh of the top-selling Model Y crossover, intended to boost demand, inadvertently led to a production halt and prompted some buyers to delay purchases, further impacting Q2 figures.

Looking ahead, while Tesla recently rolled out a limited robotaxi pilot in Austin, Texas, and had announced plans for a cheaper vehicle by June’s end, analysts project a challenging path to growth. Achieving Musk’s target of returning to sales growth this year would necessitate delivering over a million units in the second half—a record and a formidable task, even with typically stronger year-end sales.
