Israel has reportedly accepted a new 60-day ceasefire and hostage release proposal for Gaza, with an Israeli official confirming the updated framework includes stronger US assurances regarding an end to the conflict. This development follows remarks from President Donald Trump, who stated on Tuesday that Israel had “agreed to the necessary conditions” to finalize a ceasefire.

The agreement was reportedly secured by Israel’s Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer during his visit to Washington on Tuesday. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar further reiterated the country’s commitment to reaching a hostage deal and ceasefire during a press conference on Wednesday, noting “positive signs.”

While Israel has shown acceptance, Hamas is currently reviewing the proposal, and its decision remains pending. US administration officials have indicated that Hamas’s acceptance is the next crucial step. The proposal, delivered by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, was the culmination of months of behind-the-scenes efforts led by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.

A key aspect of the new proposal is Israel’s agreement to allow a significant increase in humanitarian aid through traditional UN-run channels, moving away from the controversial US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to convene his full Cabinet on Saturday night to deliberate on the proposal before a scheduled meeting with President Trump in Washington on Monday.

Despite the positive indications, challenges remain. Hamas has historically pushed for a permanent ceasefire and its continued governance in Gaza, demands Israel has resisted. However, sources suggest Hamas may be showing some flexibility on its hardline stances. The proposal also includes the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners during the ceasefire period.
