In a surprising development following Sunday’s deadly church attack in Grand Blanc, Michigan, a fundraiser for the family of assailant Thomas Sanford has now collected over $250,000. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the denomination targeted in the attack, are prominent among the donors, expressing compassion for Sanford’s widow and children, one of whom has significant medical needs.

The incident, which occurred during a worship service, saw Sanford drive his truck into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, open fire, and ignite a massive blaze. The attack left four people dead and eight injured before Sanford was killed by police. David Butler, a Latter-day Saint from Utah with no prior connection to the Sanford family, launched the GiveSendGo fundraiser. He stated his motivation was to provide stability and support for the family grappling with immense hardship.

Many donors have identified themselves as Latter-day Saints, leaving messages of love and healing on the fundraiser page. However, the initiative has also sparked criticism online. This unique outpouring of support runs parallel to other ongoing fundraisers dedicated to the victims and their families. In a profound display of resilience, one survivor, whose father was killed in the attack, shared a letter expressing forgiveness for the gunman, noting she perceived his pain during the horrifying event.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive behind what they believe was a targeted act of violence. Sanford, a 40-year-old former Marine who served in Iraq, was killed at the scene. The community of Grand Blanc and the church nationwide remain in shock, with vigils held and flags lowered to honor the victims.
