Apple is reportedly exploring the integration of artificial intelligence technology from leading third-party developers, Anthropic or OpenAI, to power a new iteration of its voice assistant, Siri. This potential move represents a significant departure from Apple’s long-standing reliance on its in-house models for core features, according to recent reports.

Discussions have reportedly taken place with both AI pioneers, with Apple requesting custom versions of their large language models (LLMs) for testing within its cloud infrastructure. While these deliberations are in early stages and no final decision has been reached, the news spurred a 2% rise in Apple’s shares on Monday, reversing earlier declines.

This development comes amidst previous reports of delays in Siri’s AI improvements, with Apple having indicated in March that significant upgrades would not materialize until 2026. The company also underwent an executive reshuffle earlier this year to accelerate its AI initiatives. At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Apple showcased more incremental AI advancements, such as live call translations, and announced plans to open its foundational AI models to third-party developers, while also offering OpenAI’s code completion tools within its own developer software. The potential adoption of external LLMs for Siri underscores Apple’s intensified focus on leveraging advanced AI capabilities to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
