Portland Councilor Mitch Green Urges Military to Defy Trump’s Planned National Guard Deployment
Portland City Councilor and Army veteran Mitch Green has issued a strong appeal to current and former U.S. military personnel, urging them to oppose President Donald Trump’s proposed deployment of the National Guard in Portland. Green, who represents District 4, including downtown Portland, characterized the planned action as “an illegal and unprecedented assault on our civil rights” by the Trump administration.
In a video statement released by his office, Green appeared in Army fatigues from Terry Schrunk Plaza, a federal park near City Hall. He called on service members potentially facing deployment to remember their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic,” emphasizing that this oath does not demand “absolute obedience” to the president. “You have not only the right, but the duty to disobey an unlawful order,” Green asserted.
The progressive councilor encouraged veterans and active-duty members to participate in protests against the deployment, specifically asking them to do so in uniform. Green, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has been a vocal critic of Trump’s policies since taking office in January. He previously stated in July that he was prepared for arrest to defend the city against federal actions, expressing an obligation to “take that risk instead of rolling over for an authoritarian.”
While Green continues his outspoken stance, fellow District 4 Councilor Eric Zimmerman, also an Army veteran and member of the Oregon National Guard, declined to comment on the matter.
