On Sunday, June 22, 2024, a shooting occurred at CrossPointe Community Church, located at 36125 Glenwood Road in Wayne, Michigan, approximately 15 miles west of downtown Detroit. The incident took place around 11:00 a.m. during a Vacation Bible School service attended by approximately 150 people.

According to Wayne Police Department statements on Facebook and reports from the Detroit News, an unidentified armed male opened fire outside the church. The attacker did not enter the church building. However, multiple bullets struck the church structure.

A church deacon attempted to stop the attacker by running him over with a Ford F-150 pickup truck. Following this, a church security guard fatally shot the assailant. The Wayne Police Department confirmed that the suspect was killed by the security guard.

One individual sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the incident. No other injuries were reported among the church attendees.

The motive for the attack and the identity of the shooter have not yet been publicly released by law enforcement. The Wayne Police Department is actively investigating the incident.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has deployed leadership and support teams to Wayne in response to the shooting, as indicated by a post on X (formerly Twitter) from FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

Initial reports from WXYZ, a Detroit ABC affiliate, suggest that the suspect was on his way to the church when the deacon attempted to stop him with the truck. The suspect then reportedly opened fire on the truck, prompting the security guard’s intervention.

Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. of CrossPointe Community Church confirmed details of the event to The Detroit News, including the number of attendees, the location of the shooting outside the building, the actions of the deacon and the security guard, and the fact that no one inside the church was injured.

As of the time of this report, the investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected to be released by the Wayne Police Department as they become available. The investigation will likely focus on determining the shooter’s identity, motive, and a complete reconstruction of the events leading up to and during the shooting.
