On Sunday, a suicide bombing occurred at the Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood of Damascus, Syria. The attack resulted in significant casualties and damage to the church building.

According to the Syrian interior ministry, the suicide bomber was identified as a member of the Islamic State. The ministry’s statement detailed that the bomber entered the church, opened fire, and then detonated his explosive vest. A security source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated that two men were involved in the attack.

Initial reports from the Syrian state news agency, citing the health ministry, indicated nine fatalities and thirteen injuries. However, subsequent reports from security sources and medical sources raised the death toll to at least fifteen. Medical sources further reported at least 25 wounded individuals. Some local media outlets reported that children were among the casualties.

A livestream from the scene, provided by Syria’s civil defense force, the White Helmets, depicted extensive damage within the church. The footage showed a bloodied floor, shattered church pews, and significant destruction to the church’s masonry.

The incident marks the first suicide bombing within Damascus since the beginning of the Syrian conflict. The attack occurred during a mass at the church.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who assumed office in January, has repeatedly stated his commitment to protecting minority groups during his tenure.

The exact number of casualties remains subject to further clarification, with discrepancies between initial and subsequent reports. Investigations into the attack are ongoing.

The event has drawn international condemnation and highlighted the ongoing security challenges in Syria.

Further updates regarding the investigation, casualty numbers, and the overall impact of the attack are expected in the coming days and weeks.
