Some 500 National Guard members have arrived in the Chicago area, mobilizing for an initial 60-day period, despite an ongoing lawsuit challenging their deployment. The move has escalated a bitter political conflict between President Donald Trump and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, with Trump calling for the arrest of Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The deployment, announced Wednesday morning by U.S. Northern Command, includes approximately 200 members from the Texas National Guard and 300 from the Illinois National Guard. They are stationed at the Army Reserve center in Elwood, near Joliet, and are tasked with protecting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel, other federal functions, and federal property.

Governor Pritzker has vehemently denounced the deployment as an “unconstitutional invasion” and “Trump’s Invasion,” leading Illinois and Chicago to file a lawsuit on Monday to block the federalization of troops. Pritzker and Mayor Johnson have publicly defied Trump’s threats and rhetoric.

In a related development, the Trump administration also sought to deploy the National Guard in Portland, Oregon. However, a judge granted a temporary restraining order this week, blocking the move and prompting Oregon Governor Tina Kotek to direct U.S. Northern Command to demobilize local troops and return California Guard members.
