At least 19 individuals have tragically died this month in Russia’s western Leningrad region due to suspected alcohol poisoning, local officials confirmed on Friday. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation and detained two suspects in connection with the fatalities.

The regional government’s press service stated that all 19 deaths, recorded within the Slantsy District in September, are linked to alcohol consumption. Eight of these cases have been laboratory-confirmed as methanol poisoning, a highly toxic substance often found in illicit alcoholic beverages.

Investigators have detained a man and a woman as part of the ongoing probe into the ‘poisoning of several residents of the Slantsy District with counterfeit alcohol.’ Incidents of mass deaths from tainted homemade alcohol are a persistent public health challenge in Russia, an issue the government has sought to address through toughened legislation following previous tragedies. The current investigation aims to uncover the source of the deadly counterfeit spirits and prevent further casualties.
