An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has been relieved of his current duties as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launches a full investigation into a violent confrontation that occurred on September 25, 2025, outside a New York City immigration court. The incident, caught on video, shows the officer shoving a woman to the ground shortly after her husband was arrested.

The video, widely circulated, depicts the woman pleading with the agent as her husband was being detained at the 26 Federal Plaza federal building. The officer can be heard repeatedly saying “Adios” before forcefully pushing the woman against a wall, causing her to fall. Her crying children were reportedly standing nearby as the officer stood over her.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned the officer’s actions, stating, “The officer’s conduct in this video is unacceptable and beneath the men and women of ICE. Our ICE law enforcement are held to the highest professional standards and this officer is being relieved of current duties as we conduct a full investigation.”

The incident has sparked immediate outrage and calls for accountability from local officials. NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, who was at the federal building, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the woman’s husband had been detained by “masked ICE agents who did not identify themselves” just moments before the shove. The woman was reportedly taken to the hospital.

Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., confirmed that the woman and her two young children sought safety in his office after the incident. Goldman described the act as an “egregious act of excessive force” and has since sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, referring the ICE agent for a criminal investigation. He emphasized the need for a “deterrent effect by seriously investigating it for criminal wrongdoing.” A spokesperson for NYC Mayor Eric Adams also expressed concern, stating, “Our entire city is less safe when immigrants are afraid to use basic services and attend court hearings.”
