DOJ Sues Six States Over Refusal to Turn Over Voter Registration Rolls

Washington — The Justice Department announced Thursday it has filed lawsuits against six states for their alleged refusal to provide statewide voter registration lists as requested by the Attorney General. The legal action targets top election officials in California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, asserting that their non-compliance violates federal law.
Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the critical importance of accurate voter data, stating, “Clean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections. Every state has a responsibility to ensure that voter registration records are accurate, accessible and secure — states that don’t fulfill that obligation will see this Department of Justice in court.”
Filed in federal courts across the respective states, the lawsuits aim to compel election officials to release comprehensive voter information, including names, birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and partial Social Security numbers. The Justice Department contends that without these rolls, it cannot verify whether states are adhering to list maintenance requirements mandated by the Help America Vote Act.
This move follows previous lawsuits against Oregon and Maine for similar failures to provide voter list maintenance procedures and registration data. State officials, including California’s Secretary of State, have cited privacy concerns. Minnesota’s top lawyer questioned the legal basis for the DOJ’s request and sought assurances on data protection, while New Hampshire’s Secretary of State cited state law prohibiting disclosure.
The push for access to voter rolls comes amidst ongoing national debates over election integrity. President Trump, who returned to the White House in January, has been a vocal critic of state voting procedures, signing an executive order earlier this year aimed at overhauling U.S. elections and mandating proof of citizenship for voter registration, provisions that have faced legal challenges.
