Conditions in the Israeli-designated ‘humanitarian zone’ in southern Gaza have reportedly worsened dramatically, with displaced Palestinians describing a descent from one ‘hellscape to another’. As Israel continues its military operations in Gaza City, hundreds of thousands are being pushed into an ever-shrinking area, leading to severe overcrowding and a critical shortage of basic necessities.

Recent reports highlight the dire safety concerns, with two children tragically killed and others injured in alleged Israeli strikes on tents within the zone. This raises significant questions about the efficacy and safety of these designated areas. Residents like Sylvia al-Shurafi, who was forced to flee, paint a grim picture: “We are living in such harsh conditions that even an animal couldn’t survive them.” Many, having made arduous journeys south, find themselves without shelter, food, or water.

The UN’s humanitarian office (Ocha) spokesperson, Olga Cherevko, confirms the escalating crisis, noting that the area is ‘full’ and new arrivals are left stranded. Aid agencies, including Unicef, are struggling to meet the rapidly growing demand, with reports of widespread disease among children and families often limited to one meager meal a day. UN workers also report facing tight Israeli restrictions on aid entry, with some essential items now classified as ‘luxuries’ and denied passage.

Despite Israeli military claims of ‘vital humanitarian infrastructure’ and available plots for tents, aid experts and on-the-ground reports contradict this, emphasizing the overwhelming challenges of scaling up humanitarian response in such a densely packed and devastated region. The ongoing conflict and severe restrictions continue to exacerbate a profound humanitarian catastrophe for over two million Palestinians.
