Human Remains Believed to Be Travis Decker Discovered on Grindstone Mountain

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Chelan County authorities have announced the discovery of human remains on Grindstone Mountain near Leavenworth, Washington, strongly believed to be those of Travis Decker. Decker has been the target of an intensive manhunt since May 30, when he was accused of kidnapping and murdering his three young daughters: Paityn (9), Evelyn (8), and Olivia (5).

The discovery follows a multi-agency search operation conducted this week, spearheaded by the US Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force. Participating agencies included the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, US Border Patrol, US Forest Service, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI. Due to the remote and rugged terrain off Icicle Road, crews were airlifted by a Spokane County helicopter. Drones and cadaver dogs were instrumental in locating the remains in a heavily wooded area south of Leavenworth, just a few miles from where the girls’ bodies were previously found.

While positive identification is still pending, preliminary findings indicate the remains belong to Decker. Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison reported that clothing and personal items found near the remains were consistent with what Decker was believed to be wearing when he disappeared.

Decker’s truck was found unoccupied near the Rock Island Campground on June 2, shortly after the tragic discovery of the girls’ bodies. Law enforcement had previously issued warnings about Decker’s military survival training, suggesting he was likely hiding in remote areas, which led to closures in parts of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest during the extensive search efforts.

In an exclusive interview in June, the girls’ mother, Whitney Decker, described a civil divorce but noted Travis’s past attempts to exert control and a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder for which he was not believed to be on medication. He was reportedly mandated to seek mental health treatment and anger management counseling under their parenting plan but failed to comply. A GoFundMe campaign remains active to support Whitney Decker with funeral expenses and legal costs. This remains a developing story as authorities work towards definitive identification.
