Trump Labels Alleged Epstein Letter a ‘Dead Issue’ Amid House Oversight Disclosures

President Donald Trump has dismissed the ongoing controversy surrounding an alleged letter to Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th ‘birthday book’ as a ‘dead issue,’ following recent disclosures from the House Oversight Committee. Speaking on Tuesday morning, Trump stated, ‘I don’t comment on something that’s a dead issue. I gave all comments to the staff. It’s a dead issue.’
These remarks come after Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released an image on Monday, claiming it shows a birthday message allegedly sent by Trump in 2003, obtained from Epstein’s estate. The White House has vehemently denied the letter’s authenticity. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt asserted during Tuesday’s briefing, ‘The president did not write this letter. He did not sign this letter.’ Leavitt reiterated that Trump’s legal team is pursuing a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, which initially reported on the alleged letter in mid-July, and indicated the administration would support a professional handwriting expert’s review.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican, criticized Democrats for promoting a ‘narrative’ with the document, stressing the committee’s primary goal is justice for victims. While Comer noted he hadn’t personally reviewed the signature, he expressed belief in Trump’s denials. In contrast, Ranking Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia posted the alleged letter on X, demanding Trump ‘tell us the truth about what he knew and release all the Epstein files.’
The committee anticipates receiving more documents and conducting depositions as its Epstein probe continues. Brad Edwards, an attorney for Epstein survivors, criticized Trump’s ‘hypocrisy,’ arguing the defamation lawsuit only amplifies an issue Trump seemingly wishes to suppress. Leavitt, however, characterized the current media narrative surrounding Epstein as a ‘hoax’ orchestrated by Democrats to divert attention from administration achievements, clarifying she did not mean the documents themselves were fraudulent. Epstein died in custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
