Multiple Mexican Independence Day events in Chicago, including the popular El Grito Chicago festival, have been canceled or postponed due to growing anxiety over reports that former President Donald Trump plans to deploy troops and immigration agents for mass deportations. El Grito Chicago, which drew 24,000 attendees last year and was scheduled for September 13-14, is among the canceled festivities.

Organizers cited community safety as the primary concern, stating, “Holding El Grito Chicago at this time puts the safety of our community at stake – and that’s a risk we are unwilling to take.” The decision comes amidst heightened fears following Trump’s recent deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has also voiced concerns about the potential for ICE agents to target individuals at these cultural events.
