Israel Destroys Second Gaza City High-Rise as Assault Intensifies, Raising Humanitarian Alarm

The Israeli military has destroyed a second high-rise block in Gaza City, the Sussi Tower, marking the second major tower targeted in as many days as its assault on the area intensifies. Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the strike, stating “We’re continuing” on social media. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed the Sussi Tower was being used by Hamas, a charge the militant group denies. Casualties from the strike were not immediately confirmed.
This latest destruction follows Friday’s collapse of the Mushtaha Tower in Gaza City’s al-Rimal neighbourhood. The IDF stated precautionary measures, including advance warnings and precise munitions, were used to mitigate civilian harm. However, Palestinian sources reported displaced families had been sheltering in the Mushtaha Tower, and a Gaza civil defence agency spokesman accused Israel of enacting “a policy of forced displacement.”
Amid the escalating operations, Israel has continued to issue calls for Palestinians to relocate to a designated humanitarian zone in al-Mawasi in the south. The IDF urges residents to move there, promising medical care, water, and food. However, the United Nations has voiced significant concerns, describing the tent camps in al-Mawasi as overcrowded and unsafe, with southern hospitals already overwhelmed. These warnings come after five children were reportedly killed while queuing for water in al-Mawasi earlier this week, an incident the IDF is reviewing. Satellite imagery reveals extensive damage, with several neighbourhoods in parts of Gaza City reportedly levelled by Israeli strikes and demolitions over the past month.
