A Houthi drone successfully penetrated Israel’s multilayered air defenses on Sunday, striking Ramon International Airport near the resort city of Eilat. The rare hit caused limited damage, including shattered windows and one minor injury, briefly disrupting commercial airspace and diverting flights over southern Israel. This incident marks a significant escalation by the Yemen-based militant group.

The attack follows days after Israel’s targeted killing of Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi last Thursday, which prompted the group to vow increased retaliation against Israel. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the airport strike, stating it “successfully achieved its objectives” and warning that Israeli airports would be “continuously targeted.” While the Israeli military intercepted multiple Houthi drones near the border with Egypt, it is investigating why the drone that hit Ramon Airport was not identified as a hostile aircraft.

The drone strike coincides with an intensified Israeli offensive in Gaza City, where another high-rise tower housing hundreds of displaced Palestinians was leveled on Sunday. This action is part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to dismantle what it describes as the last Hamas stronghold, despite growing international and domestic opposition. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to the Gaza City assault, dismissing criticism and prioritizing a “victory over our enemies.”

Adding to the complex regional situation, Israel’s Supreme Court issued a rare ruling against the state, ordering it to ensure adequate sustenance for Palestinian detainees in its custody following allegations of malnutrition. Meanwhile, officials at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City reported at least 13 Palestinian deaths, including children, from Israeli strikes on a school and residential buildings earlier on Sunday. The Gaza Health Ministry states that over 64,000 people have been killed since the conflict began.
