Two Juveniles Charged in DC Congressional Intern’s Murder, Third Suspect Still at Large

Washington D.C. authorities have announced the arrest of two 17-year-olds in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro confirmed the arrests on Friday, September 5, 2025, stating that Jalen Lucas and Kelvin Thomas Jr. have been charged with first-degree murder and will be prosecuted as adults.
Tarpinian-Jachym, an intern for Rep. Ron Estes, was tragically killed by stray bullets on June 30, suffering four gunshot wounds. Investigators identified the suspects through extensive video review and interviews, apprehending them in D.C. Authorities are actively searching for a third juvenile suspect involved in the incident.
During her press conference, Pirro highlighted the suspects’ prior violent juvenile records and criticized the D.C. City Council, accusing them of hindering her office’s ability to effectively prosecute violent juvenile offenders. She stated, “He was an innocent bystander who was caught in a violent act that was not meant for him. His death is a stark reminder of how fragile life is and how violence too often visits us in the nation’s capital.” Prosecutors anticipate additional charges as the case proceeds to a grand jury.
