President Donald Trump on Monday intensified calls for pharmaceutical companies to substantiate the effectiveness of their COVID-19 drugs, just days after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) narrowed the scope of who can receive the latest virus vaccines. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated, “It is very important that the Drug Companies justify the success of their various Covid Drugs. Many people think they are a miracle that saved Millions of lives. Others disagree!”

The president’s demand follows the FDA’s decision last Wednesday to approve new COVID vaccine rounds exclusively for individuals at higher risk of severe illness. This directive comes amid significant upheaval within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where Director Susan Monarez was fired last week after refusing to resign. Four other senior health officials, including Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, also announced their departures.

Trump explicitly linked his demand for transparency to the CDC’s internal strife, writing, “With CDC being ripped apart over this question, I want the answer, and I want it NOW.” He further questioned the public’s access to data, noting, “I have been shown information from Pfizer, and others, that is extraordinary, but they never seem to show those results to the public. Why not???”

This leadership crisis at the CDC is part of a broader overhaul of federal health agencies initiated by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. A prominent vaccine skeptic, Kennedy has implemented widespread firings, dismantled a crucial government vaccine panel, and halted studies on mRNA vaccine technology. Trump urged drugmakers to be more forthcoming with their data to “clear up this MESS,” arguing they have allowed “everyone rip themselves apart, including Bobby Kennedy Jr. and CDC, trying to figure out the success or failure of the Drug Companies Covid work.”

Despite Kennedy’s skepticism, Trump continues to champion Operation Warp Speed, his first administration’s initiative to accelerate vaccine and therapeutic development. However, a group of nine former CDC directors, in a New York Times essay published Monday, sharply criticized Kennedy’s actions, asserting he is “endangering” Americans’ health. They described his recent decisions, including Monarez’s firing, as “unlike anything we have ever seen at the agency, and unlike anything our country has ever experienced,” expressing deep concern for the nation’s health security.
