A significant 6.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Afghanistan, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The powerful temblor occurred late Sunday at 11:47 p.m. Afghanistan time, approximately 22 miles north of Bāsawul.

Seismologists are currently reviewing available data, and the reported magnitude of the earthquake may be subject to revision as more information becomes available. The USGS also indicates that the shake-severity map, detailing areas with an intensity of 4 or greater, could be updated following further analysis. While the initial shake intensity is classified as “light” in some areas, the earthquake’s strength suggests a broader impact.

Aftershocks, which are smaller earthquakes that typically follow a larger one in the same general area, are a common occurrence. These events can continue for days, weeks, or even years, potentially affecting areas already impacted by the initial quake.
