Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has mandated the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) to spearhead a comprehensive counter-intelligence investigation into the assassination of former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy. Parubiy was tragically shot dead by an unidentified assailant in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

President Zelenskyy described Parubiy’s death as ‘a horrific murder’ and noted that the crime was ‘carefully prepared.’ In a Saturday post to Telegram, he affirmed that ‘many resources are deployed’ in the intensive search for the perpetrator. The president confirmed he had spoken with SBU head Vasyl Maliuk and instructed that ‘verified information be promptly communicated to the public’ as the investigation unfolds.

Andriy Parubiy, who chaired Ukraine’s unicameral parliament, the Rada, from April 2016 to August 2019, was a highly influential pro-European Union and pro-NATO politician. He was a key leader of the 2014 Maidan Revolution, a pivotal grassroots movement that led to the ouster of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. Following the revolution, Parubiy served as the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council in 2014, a period marked by Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the escalation of conflict in the eastern Donbas region.
