Israel has officially announced the death of notorious Hamas spokesman Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, widely known as Abu Obeida. He was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City over the weekend. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the identification at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, following earlier reports that suggested the strike targeted a senior Hamas operative.

Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the successful operation, stating on X that Abu Obeida “was sent to meet all the eliminated members of the axis of evil.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also issued a statement confirming Abu Obeida, described as “the face of the terrorist organization,” was the target of Saturday’s strike. The IDF credits intelligence from Shin Bet and Military Intelligence for locating his hideout.

For the past decade, Abu Obeida was central to Hamas’s propaganda efforts, overseeing spokesperson operations and coordinating media strategy. The IDF highlighted his role in distributing videos of the October 7 massacre and inciting terror. This strike is part of a broader campaign, with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir vowing to target remaining Hamas leadership abroad.

The cabinet meeting, where Netanyahu confirmed the news, reportedly took place in a secure location due to fears of retaliation, especially following last week’s strike that killed Houthi government prime minister Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi in Yemen. Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to defeating Hamas and securing hostages, while also emphasizing ongoing operations against the “axis of evil” across multiple fronts.
