Millions across the northern United States have a rare opportunity to witness a spectacular display of the Northern Lights tonight and tomorrow, as a powerful solar storm impacts Earth’s magnetic field.

A fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME), launched from the sun on August 30, is expected to collide with Earth late on September 1 into early September 2 (UTC). This interaction is predicted to spark a G2 (moderate) to G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm, pushing the aurora borealis much farther south than usual, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

Residents in 18 U.S. states are within the prime viewing zone for this celestial event. These include Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, South Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, New York, Wyoming, Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois.

The best window for viewing is tonight, Monday, September 1, into Tuesday morning, September 2, particularly between midnight and 2 a.m. local time. For optimal viewing, seek out dark locations away from city lights, find a clear north-facing view, and ensure clear skies. Auroras often come in waves, so patience is key.
