A large-scale humanitarian aid flotilla, featuring prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg, is poised to depart from Barcelona this Sunday, August 31st, aiming to challenge what organizers describe as the ‘illegal siege of Gaza.’

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which includes Thunberg as part of its steering committee, intends to ‘open a humanitarian corridor and end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.’ While the exact number of ships and precise departure time from the Spanish port city remain undisclosed, the mission is anticipated to be the largest solidarity effort of its kind, with more participants and vessels than all prior attempts combined. Organizers also indicate that additional ships are expected to sail from Tunisian and other Mediterranean ports on September 4th, with the entire flotilla projected to reach the war-ravaged coastal enclave by mid-September.

Beyond Thunberg, the mission will include activists from various nations, European lawmakers, and public figures such as former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau. Participants, like Portuguese lawmaker Mariana Mortágua, assert the mission’s legality under international law.

This initiative follows two previous attempts by activists in June and July to deliver aid by sea, both of which were intercepted by Israeli forces. In one incident, 12 activists, including Thunberg, were detained and expelled after their sailboat Madleen was intercepted west of Gaza.
