Israeli security forces have successfully recovered the remains of two individuals killed during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed this weekend. The bodies were identified as 56-year-old Ilan Weiss and 28-year-old Idan Shtivi, retrieved in what the Israeli military and Shin Bet described as a ‘complex rescue mission’ from Gaza.

Ilan Weiss, a civilian emergency team leader, was killed in his community of Be’eri during the initial assault. Idan Shtivi was tragically killed near the Nova music festival, with his body held in Gaza for 693 days before its return, placing the recovery around late August 2025.

The recovery comes as Israel significantly escalates its military operations in Gaza. Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated his commitment, stating, ‘We will not rest or be silent until we return all of our hostages home, both the living and the dead.’ The Israeli security cabinet has reportedly approved plans to expand operations into Gaza City.

This weekend, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City resulted in at least 17 fatalities, targeting what officials described as a ‘key’ Hamas figure. The ongoing conflict, sparked by the October 7 assault which claimed approximately 1,200 Israeli lives and led to the abduction of around 250, still sees an estimated 20 living hostages and bodies of roughly 30 more captives believed to remain in Gaza. Palestinian health officials report over 63,000 casualties in Gaza since the start of Israel’s military campaign.
