Oscar and Golden Lion laureate Guillermo Del Toro has once again captivated audiences at the Venice Film Festival, as his highly anticipated adaptation of ‘Frankenstein’ premiered to a thunderous 15-minute standing ovation this evening. The monster movie, a long-gestating project for Del Toro, played to an exceptionally enthusiastic crowd, signaling a potentially major contender on the festival circuit.

Del Toro, no stranger to Lido success, previously won the festival’s prestigious Golden Lion with 2017’s ‘The Shape of Water,’ which went on to secure four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director. His latest work, a reinterpretation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic, is currently competing at the festival before its global release on Netflix this November.

The film features an all-star cast, with Oscar Isaac as the brilliant but doomed Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi portraying his tragic creation. Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz also star. During an earlier press conference, Del Toro revealed his deep personal connection to the story, stating, “It was a religion for me. Since I was a kid… I always waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions.”

Produced by Del Toro alongside J. Miles Dale and Scott Stuber, ‘Frankenstein’ promises a grand, unique vision from the acclaimed filmmaker, now confirmed by its rapturous reception in Venice.
