Widespread reports suggesting that recent Windows 11 updates, specifically KB5063878 and KB5062660, were causing solid-state drives (SSDs) to fail have been officially debunked by both Microsoft and SSD controller manufacturer Phison.

For the past week or two, claims amplified by tech influencers on social media alleged that the August 2025 Windows security update was ‘bricking’ SSDs, particularly those utilizing Phison controllers. However, both companies have now concluded their investigations, finding no evidence to support these assertions.

Phison, which began its probe on August 18th, issued a statement on August 27th after conducting over 2,200 test cycles totaling more than 4,500 hours. The company unequivocally stated it was “unable to reproduce the reported issue, and no partners or customers have reported that the issue affected their drives at this time.”

Microsoft quickly followed suit, confirming just days later that a “thorough investigation” found “no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media.” This joint stance from the two tech giants strongly suggests that the initial reports, which appeared to originate from a Japanese Twitter user and had limited supporting evidence, were either isolated incidents or misattributions, not indicative of a widespread problem. Users can therefore proceed with the August 2025 Windows security update without concerns about their SSDs.
