Hurricane Erin has intensified to a powerful Category 4 storm, posing a significant threat of life-threatening surf and rip currents across the US East Coast. Forecasts indicate dangerous conditions, with mandatory evacuations already ordered for Hatteras Island in North Carolina, where the main highway linking it to other islands could become impassable.

The first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, Erin, previously strengthened to a Category 5 before briefly losing force and now regaining strength. While not expected to make direct landfall on the Turks and Caicos or eastern Bahamas, the storm is bringing rainfall of up to six inches (15.2cm) to these regions, with a tropical storm warning in effect.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts the core of Erin will pass to the east of the southeastern Bahamas today and move between Bermuda and the eastern US coast by mid-week, maintaining its status as a “large and dangerous hurricane.” Authorities in the Bahamas have encouraged residents to prepare, checking shelters and alternative options due to the storm’s volatile nature.

High winds from Erin previously left over 150,000 people without power in Puerto Rico, though 95% of customers had electricity restored by Sunday evening. Forecasters continue to warn of dangerous rip tides that could impact the entire US East Coast as the powerful storm approaches.
