Hurricane Erin, a sprawling Category 4 storm, is churning in the Atlantic, posing a significant threat of life-threatening rip currents and towering waves to the eastern US coastline and Bermuda, even as it remains offshore.

The storm’s immense footprint is already sending large swells hundreds of miles outward. Dangerous rip currents are expected to impact US shores from South Carolina to the Delmarva Peninsula and New Jersey starting Tuesday, worsening through midweek. Dare County, North Carolina, has issued a mandatory evacuation order for Hatteras Island, effective Tuesday, August 19, 2025, due to anticipated coastal flooding and ocean overwash.

Erin’s outer rain bands have already lashed Puerto Rico, causing flash flooding and power outages, and are impacting the southeast Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. Forecasters predict very rough seas and potential tropical storm–force winds for Bermuda later this week.

Officials are urging beachgoers to avoid the ocean during this period, citing the extreme danger posed by rip currents, which have caused 44 deaths in the US this year alone. Erin rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm over the weekend before settling back to a broader Category 4, marking a rare early-season Category 5 event and the first hurricane of the Atlantic season.
