Apple has rolled out a significant software update for select US Apple Watch models, reintroducing the highly anticipated blood oxygen level measurement feature, known as pulse oximetry. This move comes after the tech giant was compelled to remove the functionality in January 2024 due to a patent dispute with medical device maker Masimo.

The redesigned Blood Oxygen feature is now available for some Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users in the United States, delivered via iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. For devices purchased in the US on or after January 18, 2024, the blood oxygen data analysis will be performed on the paired iPhone, with results viewable in the Health app. Older models or those purchased outside the US are unaffected by this specific update.

While pulse oximetry can be a valuable tool for monitoring health, particularly for individuals with heart and lung conditions, Apple emphasizes that the feature is intended for ‘wellness’ and not medical diagnostics. The US Food and Drug Association (FDA) has not approved the Apple Watch’s pulse oximetry functions for medical use, unlike its EKG feature. The reintroduction follows a ruling by the International Trade Commission (ITC) which had previously led to an import ban on Apple Watch models infringing on Masimo’s patents.
