Microsoft has officially commenced the global rollout of its annual Windows 11 update, version 25H2, starting today. Following extensive testing in the Windows Insider Release Preview ring last month, the update is now accessible to all Windows 11 users via Windows Update.

Described as a compact “enablement package,” the 25H2 update promises a swift installation process. John Cable, VP of program management for Windows servicing and delivery, confirmed that this version incorporates all features previously announced in Windows 11 version 24H2, leveraging a shared code base for a streamlined update experience. This common foundation also means Microsoft will continue delivering new Windows features monthly to both 24H2 and 25H2 versions.

Significant behind-the-scenes improvements are a highlight of 25H2. Cable emphasized “significant advancements in build and runtime vulnerability detection, coupled with AI assisted secure coding.” The update is engineered to bolster security and mitigate threats, adhering to a robust security development lifecycle (SDL) policy.

Furthermore, the update contributes to a leaner operating system by removing older components such as PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC).

Users eager to receive the 25H2 update immediately should ensure the “get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option is enabled in Windows Update. Microsoft advises that safeguard holds may be implemented if device incompatibilities are detected, with a broader rollout planned over the coming months and known issues to be detailed on the Windows release health hub.
