Florida Expands Immigration Detention with New ‘Deportation Depot’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the opening of a second major immigration detention facility, controversially dubbed ‘Deportation Depot.’ The new center, located at Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, North Florida, is designed to hold over 1,300 detainees for processing and deportation.
This latest announcement follows the recent establishment of the ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ facility in the Everglades, which opened just last month. Construction on the ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ site was temporarily halted last week by a federal judge’s order, citing potential environmental harm to the sensitive Everglades ecosystem. Despite the construction pause, the state and federal authorities can continue to house detainees at the existing ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ site.
Governor DeSantis emphasized the state’s aggressive stance on immigration, stating, ‘We have done more on this than any other state by a country mile,’ regarding securing borders, enforcing immigration laws, and removing undocumented individuals.
