New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency for areas across Rio Arriba County, specifically targeting the city of Española and surrounding pueblo communities. The declaration, announced on Wednesday, August 13th, comes in response to a significant surge in violent crime, drug trafficking, and escalating public safety threats.

According to the Governor’s office, police dispatches in Española and nearby areas have doubled over the past two years, with calls to businesses quadrupling during the same period. Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized that the decision was made to provide immediate support to local partners and ensure the safety of residents. “When our local leaders called for help to protect their communities, we responded immediately with decisive action,” she stated, affirming the commitment to deploy all available resources to restore stability.

The emergency declaration authorizes up to $750,000 in funding for the state Department of Homeland Security of Emergency Management. This allocation is intended to coordinate response efforts and provide critical resources to the affected communities. While the declaration is in effect, the New Mexico National Guard confirmed it has not been tasked with a mission related to this emergency. The state of emergency will remain active until it is deemed no longer necessary.
