A new Siena College poll, conducted between August 4 and 7, 2025, reveals significant shifts in New York’s political landscape, notably a tightening gap in the potential gubernatorial race and a strong lead for Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral contest.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s lead against potential Republican challenger Rep. Elise Stefanik has significantly decreased. While Hochul still maintains a 14-point advantage (45% to 31%), this represents a notable drop from her 23-point lead recorded in a July 1 poll. Despite Stefanik’s gains, voter familiarity remains split, and a plurality of surveyed New Yorkers expressed concerns regarding her experience for the governorship. The statewide poll surveyed 813 registered voters and has a margin of error of 4.2%.

In the New York City mayoral race, Zohran Mamdani shows a commanding lead. The Democratic nominee is ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo by 19 percentage points among registered voters. Although the sample size for NYC voters was smaller (317 voters with a 6.7% margin of error), the poll highlights Mamdani’s strong support among young voters. Conversely, Cuomo maintains an edge among Black and Jewish voters. The poll also found that while Mamdani has a net negative statewide favorability, a plurality of New York City voters view him favorably. Andrew Cuomo’s statewide favorability, however, remains significantly lower than Mamdani’s.

Beyond the electoral contests, the Siena poll also gauged public opinion on a proposed state constitutional amendment for mid-decade redistricting. Voters appear largely divided on the measure, with only 35% supporting the idea of retaliatory gerrymandering and 34% opposing it, indicating no clear consensus even among Democrats.
