Austin Target Shooting: Three Killed, Suspect Apprehended After Freeway Chase

A gunman opened fire Monday in the parking lot of an Austin, Texas, Target store, resulting in the deaths of three individuals—two adults and a child. Police swiftly apprehended the suspect after a chaotic getaway involving two stolen vehicles and a chase that spanned across the city.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis identified the suspect as a man in his 30s with a history of mental health issues. The motive behind the deadly shooting remains under active investigation. According to Chief Davis, the suspect fled the scene in a stolen car, crashed it, and then stole another vehicle from a dealership before being detained approximately 20 miles away in south Austin, where officers used a Taser to bring him into custody.
Officers, responding to a 2:15 p.m. call, discovered three people shot in the store’s parking lot. An adult and a child were pronounced dead at the scene, while another adult died shortly after being transported to a hospital. Authorities believe one of the victims was the owner of the initial car stolen from the Target parking lot.
Chief Davis expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is a very sad day for Austin.” Mayor Kirk Watson echoed these sentiments on X, condemning it as a “sickening, cowardly act of gun violence.” Target released a statement expressing devastation and offering grief counseling to its employees. The tragic event unfolded amid the busy back-to-school shopping season and comes just weeks after a separate mass stabbing attack at a Walmart in Michigan.
