Firefighters and military personnel are tirelessly battling a significant wildfire on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius, near Naples, Italy, as of Monday, August 11, 2025. The blaze, which ignited last Friday, August 8, has prompted the closure of all hiking routes up the iconic volcano, a popular tourist destination.

The national fire service has deployed 12 ground teams and six Canadair planes to combat the inferno, which has scorched approximately 500 hectares (over 1,235 acres) within the Vesuvius National Park. The Campania Region confirmed that firefighting efforts are ongoing across three fronts, primarily on the densely vegetated Mount Somma side of Vesuvius.

Smoke from the fire is visible from the ancient Pompeii archaeological site, though the site remains open to visitors. Authorities have utilized drones for better monitoring and have brought in reinforcement firefighters from other regions, while the army has created vital fire breaks.

The challenging conditions, including high temperatures, strong winds, and the flammable nature of pine needles, are complicating containment efforts. The local prosecutors’ office has launched an investigation into the origin of the fires. The agricultural community, particularly vineyards and farms known for wine, apricots, and tomatoes, faces an “enormous disaster” due to the widespread destruction.
