Recent Israeli strikes across central and southern Gaza have resulted in significant civilian casualties, including women and children, intensifying global demands for an immediate ceasefire. These latest attacks occurred as international diplomatic efforts at the United Nations General Assembly in New York focused on de-escalating the conflict and advancing peace initiatives.

On Thursday, Israeli forces targeted residential areas and displacement tents, killing at least 17 people. Local health officials reported that multiple children were among the dead, with one family losing a couple and five of their children in a strike in Zawaida. Another attack in Khan Younis claimed the lives of a man, his pregnant wife, and their 10-year-old child.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking on the sidelines of the UNGA, strongly criticized the ongoing “total war” in Gaza, labeling it a “failure” that has not achieved its stated goal of ending Hamas. He reiterated France’s recognition of a Palestinian state as a crucial step to isolate Hamas and urged U.S. President Donald Trump to press Israel for a ceasefire, emphasizing that a path to peace is essential to halt the violence.

The escalating violence coincides with heightened diplomatic activity and regional tensions. Earlier this week, several European nations, including France, alongside countries like the UK, Canada, and Australia, announced or reaffirmed their recognition of a Palestinian state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vehemently denounced these moves before his UNGA address, where he is also slated to meet with President Trump. Meanwhile, the U.S. has presented a “Trump 21-point plan for peace” to Arab leaders, though details remain undisclosed.

The conflict’s regional impact was further highlighted by Israeli retaliatory strikes in Yemen on Thursday, targeting Houthi military sites. This followed a Houthi drone attack on Wednesday that wounded 22 people in the southern Israeli city of Eilat, marking a rare breach of Israeli air defenses.

The humanitarian situation in northern Gaza continues to deteriorate, with experts warning of famine conditions. Aid deliveries have been severely curtailed by Israel, and the recent closure of the Allenby Bridge Crossing threatens to further undermine critical relief efforts. The ongoing Israeli campaign in Gaza, triggered by the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks, has resulted in over 65,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
