A harrowing incident unfolded recently in Austria when a man survived after clinging to the outside of a high-speed train. The dramatic event occurred on a Saturday, reportedly after the train departed Sankt Poelten station while the man was taking a cigarette break on the platform.

According to railways spokesman Herbert Hofer, the unidentified 24-year-old Algerian man grabbed onto the train as it began to leave. Hofer emphasized the extreme danger of such actions, stating, “It is irresponsible, this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying.” He also highlighted the risk to emergency services involved in such incidents.

The railjet train, en route from Zurich to Vienna, was delayed by seven minutes due to the event. An onboard passenger cited by Austrian tabloid Heute reported that the man jumped into the space between two carriages, then began banging on windows to attract attention. This prompted the conductor to activate the emergency brake, allowing the crew to bring the man safely aboard. Upon arrival at Vienna’s Meidling station, the man was taken into police custody.

This incident echoes a similar event from January, where a 40-year-old Hungarian man survived clinging to a German high-speed train for 20 miles after a cigarette break, reportedly not wanting to be separated from his luggage.
