Danish authorities have officially declared the recent widespread drone overflights across the nation a ‘hybrid attack,’ as disruptions continued on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, leading to the complete closure of Aalborg Airport. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated at a Thursday press conference that the systematic nature of the operations, affecting multiple sensitive sites including military bases, strongly points to a professional actor.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the goal of such attacks is to ‘create fear’ and ‘discord.’ The latest incidents, which saw drones reported near Aalborg Airport, Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and Fighter Wing Skrydstrup air base, follow similar disruptions earlier in the week, including the temporary closure of Copenhagen Airport.

While Danish officials, including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, have not directly linked the incidents to Russia, they acknowledge the possibility, especially given recent Russian drone violations of NATO airspace. Defense Minister Poulsen noted that Copenhagen has options to respond through NATO, including triggering Article 4 for formal consultations. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed discussions with Frederiksen, affirming that allies are working to ensure the safety of critical infrastructure.

The investigation is exploring several theories, including the possibility that drones were launched from nearby ships. Authorities have identified three Russian-linked tankers as potential launch points, with one, the Pushpa (also known as Boracay), being near Aalborg during the latest reported overflights. The Pushpa is listed on Ukraine’s ‘War Sanctions’ website as part of Russia’s ‘shadow fleet.’ The Kremlin has, however, dismissed accusations, calling them ‘baseless’ and suggesting the sightings are a ‘staged provocation.’
