Reno Casino Shooting Leaves Three Dead, Suspect Critical

RENO, NV – A tragic shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort on Monday morning resulted in the deaths of three individuals, with the suspected shooter now in critical condition after being apprehended by police. The incident, which unfolded shortly after 7:00 a.m. at the popular Reno hotel-casino, prompted a rapid response from law enforcement and left the community in shock.
According to authorities, an unidentified man began firing a handgun in the valet area outside the resort, striking five people. One victim died at the scene, and another succumbed to their injuries after being transported to Renown Regional Medical Center. The suspect then moved through the parking lot, where he exchanged gunfire with a Grand Sierra Resort security officer before fatally shooting a person driving through the lot, who also died at the scene.
Reno police officers arrived on the scene around 7:25 a.m. and quickly located the suspect on the northwest side of the property. Following an exchange of gunfire, police apprehended the individual, who was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Two other victims initially hospitalized were also in critical condition, though one victim was later treated and released. An officer sustained minor injuries, likely from glass fragments, during the confrontation.
“I want to start with my deepest condolences to the victims and their families, as well as to our entire community,” stated Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance at a press conference. “Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure.” Mayor Hillary Schieve echoed these sentiments, praising the swift response of police and GSR security, which she credited with preventing further loss of life.
The motive behind the shooting remains unknown and is currently under investigation, led by the Sparks Police Department with assistance from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Police have stated there is no reason to believe the suspect and victims were connected. The Grand Sierra Resort expressed its heartbreak over the “senseless violence” and affirmed its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, while assuring the public that the resort remains operational and there is no ongoing threat.
