A wave of grief swept through Austria on Tuesday following a devastating mass shooting at the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school in Graz, the country’s second-largest city. The attack, which claimed the lives of ten people, is the deadliest in Austria’s recent history and one of the most significant school shootings in Europe in recent years.

Police confirmed that a 21-year-old former student, whose name has not yet been released, opened fire at the school around 10 a.m. He was later found dead in a school bathroom from an apparent suicide. The swift and extensive police response included deploying over 300 officers, including specialized COBRA units—Austria’s equivalent of SWAT teams—and a police helicopter.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker declared three days of national mourning, calling the tragedy a “national tragedy.” The nation is now grappling with the immense loss and the heartbreaking aftermath of this senseless act of violence.
