Negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza have been suspended, with both US and Israeli delegations departing from Qatar’s capital, Doha. Washington has accused Hamas of failing to negotiate in good faith, leading to the abrupt halt in discussions.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff stated that the decision to recall the American team was prompted by Hamas’s latest response, which he believes demonstrates a clear lack of commitment to reaching a ceasefire. Witkoff emphasized that while mediators made significant efforts, Hamas did not appear to be coordinated or acting genuinely, leading to a re-evaluation of strategies to secure hostage releases and stabilize Gaza.

The Israeli government has not officially detailed its reasons for withdrawal, though a senior Israeli official, speaking anonymously, insisted there was no ‘collapse’ of the talks but criticized Hamas’s ‘rejectionist’ stance. The official indicated a willingness to return to negotiations once a path to bridge existing gaps is identified.

Hamas, for its part, expressed surprise at Witkoff’s remarks and reiterated its desire to continue negotiations, affirming its keenness to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement. This latest round of talks, involving Qatari and Egyptian mediators, had been ongoing for over two weeks, highlighting the deep divisions that remain among all parties.

The suspension of talks comes amidst a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) recently reported a severe increase in malnutrition among children in Gaza City, with one in five now affected. International aid and human rights organizations have warned of mass starvation, urging governments to intervene as aid deliveries remain severely restricted by Israel, which controls access to the Strip.
