Nepal is grappling with a severe crisis as violent anti-government protests, largely led by Gen Z, continue to escalate, claiming at least 22 lives and injuring hundreds. The unrest has seen the tragic death of the wife of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, who was reportedly burned alive when her home was set ablaze. The nation’s parliament building and residences of political leaders have also been torched.

The demonstrations, which began on Monday, September 8, 2025, were initially sparked by a controversial government ban on major social media platforms. Although the ban was swiftly repealed on Tuesday, September 9, and Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, along with other key officials, stepped down, the protests persist. Deep-seated public resentment over political corruption and a critical lack of opportunities for young people are cited as core drivers of the widespread discontent.

In a bid to restore order, the Nepalese military was deployed to Kathmandu on Tuesday, imposing a curfew across the capital. The United Nations human rights chief, Volker Türk, has called for an urgent investigation into the fatalities and violence, emphasizing the need for Nepal to address the underlying issues in adherence to international human rights standards. The Nepali Army has appealed to young protesters for discipline and responsibility as the country navigates this volatile period.
