Federal authorities are spearheading an investigation into a horrific incident at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, where a 40-year-old man rammed his car into the building, opened fire on worshippers, and intentionally set it ablaze this morning. The attack has left at least four people dead and several others wounded.

The gunman, identified as a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, was killed by police. He used an assault rifle during the assault, which officials are investigating as an act of targeted violence. While the motive remains unknown, the FBI has taken the lead on the case, suggesting potential violations of federal law.

Police confirm at least four fatalities, with two deaths attributed to gunshot wounds. Eight other individuals, including children, sustained injuries. Authorities anticipate discovering more victims as they secure the chapel, which is now considered a total loss. Investigators also believe the suspect deliberately started the fire using an accelerant, and suspected explosive devices linked to the incident were found, though it’s unclear if they were used to ignite the blaze.

The search for a motive continues, with a physical search of the perpetrator’s residence underway. Law enforcement is also working to obtain search warrants for digital media that may shed light on why the attack occurred.
