Former federal prosecutor Maurene Comey has initiated legal action against the Trump administration, alleging her firing on July 16, 2025, was unlawful and unconstitutional. The daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, Maurene Comey claims she was dismissed “without cause, without advance notice, and without an opportunity to contest it” despite an exemplary nearly decade-long career.

The lawsuit, filed this Monday, asserts that the administration provided “no legitimate explanation” for her termination from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, suggesting it was politically motivated due to her father’s public criticisms of then-President Trump. The suit highlights that her dismissal occurred just one day after she was asked to lead a significant public corruption case.

According to the filing, then-interim U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, when questioned about the firing, stated, “All I can say is it came from Washington. I can’t tell you anything else.” The suit also points to far-right activist Laura Loomer’s social media campaign against Comey shortly before her firing, following a controversial Instagram post by James Comey.

Maurene Comey, who worked on high-profile cases involving figures like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jeffrey Epstein, seeks reinstatement to her position and back pay. The defendants named in the lawsuit include the Department of Justice, the Executive Office of the President, and Attorney General Pam Bondi. Comey previously penned a letter to colleagues warning, “If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain. Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought.”
