New York City Mayor Eric Adams publicly reaffirmed his commitment to seek reelection in November, definitively stating, “I am in the race.” His announcement, made at a press conference on August 6, 2025, followed reports that advisors to former President Donald Trump had been actively trying to persuade him to withdraw from the mayoral contest. These efforts, which gained momentum in early August, reportedly included floating a potential ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia as an incentive.

Sources indicated that a recent in-person meeting in Florida between Trump adviser Steve Witkoff and Mayor Adams was a clear attempt to facilitate Adams’ exit. At the time, Adams was reportedly weighing various options, including opportunities in the private sector. The meeting was first reported by The New York Times.

Addressing the speculation, Adams was unequivocal: “I am the only one that can beat Mamdani,” referring to Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, who currently leads in polling. He also dismissed reports of an imminent White House visit, stating he would instead be campaigning across New York City.

The Trump team’s involvement reportedly stemmed from concerns among Republican donors in New York regarding Mamdani’s potential victory. Trump himself expressed a desire for a consolidated opposition, remarking on August 5, 2025, “I’d prefer not to have a communist mayor of New York City.” Had both Adams and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa withdrawn, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, would have been Mamdani’s primary remaining challenger.
