Senator Bernie Sanders has intensified calls for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to step down as Donald Trump’s Health Secretary, citing recent widespread disarray within US health agencies and what Sanders describes as dangerous policies.

In a strongly worded op-ed published recently, the Vermont senator accused Kennedy of “endangering the health of the American people now and into the future” and asserted, “He must resign.” Sanders criticized the Trump administration and Kennedy for failing to uphold their promise to “Make America Healthy Again,” arguing their actions have achieved the opposite.

Sanders highlighted the recent dismissal of Susan Monarez, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with the resignations of four other senior CDC officials. These departures reportedly occurred after Monarez refused to endorse Kennedy’s controversial directives.

The senator condemned Secretary Kennedy’s ongoing “crusade against vaccines and his advocacy of conspiracy theories” that have been repeatedly debunked by scientific experts. Sanders pointed to Kennedy’s claims that “there’s no vaccine that is safe and effective” and his reliance on discredited sources, arguing that Kennedy has “profited from and built a career on sowing mistrust in vaccines.”

According to Sanders, Kennedy is now leveraging his authority as head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to wage “a full-blown war on science, on public health and on truth itself.” He warned that Kennedy’s actions are making it increasingly difficult for Americans to access essential, life-saving vaccines, potentially leading to the resurgence of eradicated diseases.

The Trump administration has faced rare bipartisan criticism following Monarez’s firing, which coincided with significant budget cuts to the CDC and growing concerns about political interference. Kennedy’s tenure has been marked by continued questionable medical and health claims, drawing sharp rebuke from experts and lawmakers. More than 750 current and former US health agency employees recently signed a letter denouncing Kennedy as an “existential threat to public health,” accusing him of dismantling public health infrastructure and spreading inaccurate information. This comes on the heels of a deadly shooting at CDC headquarters earlier this month, reportedly influenced by vaccine misinformation.
