Prominent Ukrainian Politician Andriy Parubiy Assassinated in Lviv

Andriy Parubiy, a former speaker of Ukraine’s parliament and a leading figure in the country’s pro-European protest movements, was shot dead on Saturday in Lviv, western Ukraine. The 54-year-old politician, who also previously served as secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, was reportedly killed by a gunman disguised as a delivery driver on an e-bike.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the incident as a “horrific murder,” vowing that “all necessary forces and means” would be deployed in the investigation. Prosecutors have since opened a murder probe, with police actively searching for the shooter. Motives for the assassination have not yet been disclosed.
Local media, citing anonymous sources, indicated that the assailant fired multiple shots at Parubiy, killing him instantly. Photos purporting to show the crime scene circulated, depicting a man with a bloodied face lying in a Lviv street.
The killing has sent shockwaves through Ukraine, with some officials hinting at potential Russian involvement. Former President Petro Poroshenko described Parubiy’s death as “a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine,” linking it to ongoing tensions. Both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of political and military assassinations since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.
