U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has asserted that France’s recent recognition of Palestinian statehood directly scuttled any prospects for successful ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. The top American diplomat stated that French President Emmanuel Macron’s unilateral decision effectively rewarded Hamas for its actions, signaling to the group that its tactics were achieving international recognition.

Rubio’s comments, made in an interview this week with Eternal Word Television Network, come after ceasefire talks reportedly collapsed in late July, with the U.S. delegation citing Hamas’s lack of good faith. According to Rubio, the negotiations ‘fell apart on the day Macron made the unilateral decision that he’s going to recognize the Palestinian state.’

The move by France was quickly followed by similar recognitions from the United Kingdom and Canada, drawing immediate criticism from both the United States and Israel, who argue such actions undermine efforts for a negotiated peace.
